Five students were detained by the Bangalore police for allegedly circulating anti-Modi messages on ‘Whatsapp’, over a complaint filed by RTI Activist Jayant Mukund Tinaikar. According to news reports, Tinaikar received a morphed picture showing final rites of Modi being performed, attended by other BJP leaders. It had a caption: Na Jeet Paye Jhooton ke Sardar– Ab ki Baar Antim Sanskar(A false leader will never win, this time it’s final rites). Tinaikar told TOI “I immediately brought it to the notice of senior BJP leaders in Delhi, who in turn, told me to immediately approach the superintendent of police and file a complaint”. The boys have been charged under Sectionn 505 of the IPC (issuing statements amounting to public mischief with intent to cause fear or alarm) and Section 66a. Out of them 4 were released by the police on 25th May post questioning, except one Waqas Barmawar who continues to be in police custody. Waqas is an Aam Aadmi Party activist.
